Woman Hit by a Drunk Driver and Baby Died
Ashley Acosta is in critical condition, after a driver who at present faces DUI charges hit her vehicle. Seven months meaning, she lost her unborn child in the crash.
MORROW, Ga. — An 18 year former meaning woman is in disquisitional condition and her unborn baby has died. The Morrow Law Section says they were hit past a driver who at present faces many charges, including first degree vehicular feticide.
Ashley Acosta'southward mother, Elizabeth Robledo, who lives in United mexican states, spoke exclusively with 11Alive reporter Paola Suro. The interviews were washed in Spanish and take since been translated to English language.
"She lost her baby and she doesn't know it yet considering she is in a coma," said Robledo. "They don't requite us much hope."
Just hope, faith, and prayer is what Robledo is property onto, equally her girl remains in critical condition, with life threatening injuries at Grady Infirmary.
Morrow Police say the crash happened at the intersection of Jonesboro Road and Morrow Road on Jan. 30.
Morrow Police said the commuter of a Ford F-150 pickup truck was under the influence of alcohol, didn't terminate at a red light while traveling southward on Jonesboro Route and crashed into a Chevrolet Cruze just before 2 a.m.
Acosta, who was seven months pregnant, was in the passenger seat of the Chevy.
"My girl is a fighter. She'due south full of beloved. Tender, sweet, compassionate. She'southward a person who wants to button forward and get alee in life. She has dreams and goals still," her mother told 11Alive.
Acosta'south fiancé, Emanuel Acoltzi, was driving the Chevy and was subsequently treated for minor injuries. Robledo says Acoltzi called her not too long agone.
"He said, 'Mother-in-police force, forgive me because I was not able to accept good care of your daughter'... I told him it'southward not his fault. He fifty-fifty went in to say goodbye to his baby. He was devastated," Robledo added.
They had plans of getting married and naming their son Mateo. Acosta had plans of one day owning her ain blast salon. Emanuel was planning on enlisting in the military to give their family a "amend life."
All those dreams put on hold as she now fights for her life.
"Why do people drinkable and drive when there are then many alternatives similar Uber to get home? I keep turning to God," added Robledo. "I don't want to be angry at the driver."
Instead, she is focusing on getting to Atlanta, where Acosta has been living with her father, siblings and fiancé. Robledo doesn't have the legal documents allowing her to travel and be with her family during this time. She is hoping to obtain a humanitarian visa.
"It'due south crucial for me to be able to be there to help my other children emotionally and for them to assist me," she said. "My children want u.s.a. to coffin the baby so that if Ashley wakes upwardly, she has somewhere to go cry and think her baby."
Morrow Police force added that the driver of the truck was arrested on the scene and is currently being charged with:
- 1st-degree vehicular feticide
- Serious injury past vehicle
- Driving under the influence of alcohol
- Failure to obey a traffic control device
"My daughter is no longer going to exist a mom… merely please, God, let her have life," Robledo pleaded, as tears streamed downwardly her face.
11Alive has reached out to the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta to see what arrangements tin be made for the family.
The function called reporter Paola Suro Midweek morning to let 11Alive know they are working with Acoltzi to aid with legally and financially. They are also in communication with Robledo to assist her all the same possible in getting to Atlanta. Robledo confirmed the function has been in touch with her.
The family unit has also set a fundraising page to assist with Mateo's burial.

Hours later, the Morrow Police section responded to another unrelated vehicle crash with injuries, also involving someone driving under the influence of alcohol.
In a statement, Morrow Police force Chief Renan Lopez said, "these cases are reminders of the tragic consequences of a conclusion to drive impaired. Death, injuries, harm, and life-long memories of these horrific events are terrible scars that will be carried by the individuals involved and by our community. Our thoughts are with the families of those touched past these completely preventable acts."
